Now they need to hit the table so I can learn how they play. Hopefully soon.

Making a start on the Tengu

That's me cleared my historical Bushido painting backlog (I've been playing a while and have Savage Wave and Temple of Rokan forces). So now I'm able to make a proper start on my Tengu.

There are couple of extras to the starter which should allow me to get near to 50 rice by a few routes (though I suspect I won't be able to hit 50 dead on without the special card pack for the Tengu, there's always something more to get in this game...).

The extras are Hokibo (the big one in the centre) and a scout of the blue gale (on the extreme left).

As I finish them I'll post more images.

Bamboo Stands

Model railway supplies are frequently a great place to find scenery pieces for wargaming. A while back I happened across a Chinese seller on eBay that did plastic bamboo plant packs that looked spot on for creating scenery for Bushido.

  • Plastic bamboo.
  • Blue Styrofoam.
  • Black paint.
  • PVA glue.
  • Basing sand.
  • Sepia calligraphy ink.
  • A4 card suitable for passing through a printer (optional).
First step is to cut the Styrofoam up into irregular shapes for the bamboo stands. I bevelled the edges to reduce the apparent thickness of the terrain pieces.

As the blue will show through the texturing step later on, the next step is just to paint the pieces with black acrylic paint.

As the finished bamboo stand wasn't going to have space to place models in it, I decided to create area templates when model placement was going to be an issue. So I printed out a bamboo pattern onto some A4 card, traced round the bases and cut them out. I did it at this point while the edges of the Styrofoam were easier to trace.

Next was gluing sand to the to the terrain. I used neat PVA glue and an old brush. Once the top surface is covered in PVA, basing sand is poured over the glue until it is completely covered.

Once the glue is dry then the pieces are ready for the inking step. I use calligraphy ink for this. Just treat the ink like paint and use an old brush as the sand will be hard on the bristles.

Once the ink is dry it's time to add the bamboo.

The plastic bamboo I got has a wire core, which is going to make attaching it to the terrain piece pretty easy. All I did was strip the plastic off of the bottom 1/4" or so and stick the stripped end into the Styrofoam of the base piece.

Finally I went with a scattering of leaf litter material glued on with neat PVA.

If you want to try this yourself a quick search on eBay for "plastic bamboo scenery" should find what you need. For the other bits and pieces I can recommend where you'll find all sorts of useful bits and pieces for terrain, there's plenty of eBay sellers too.

Mistakes? No mistakes made here!

Walked into my local store today and picked up some goodies for my Ryu!  Can't wait to get started on them.

Order has been placed!

Our order to GCT has been placed and we're now awaiting our 2 Rulebooks and 4 Starter sets to arrive!

It's safe to say we're pretty excited about the whole thing and we are hoping to get things kicked off at the end of the month!  All going well, we should be able to kick-start a growing community as we have done with so many other games before at Dundee Wargames and the local area.

Faction Trait Reference Sheets

One thing that can slow down the game when you are learning how to play is the constant flipping backwards and forwards through the traits section of the rule book finding out what the traits on the models' cards actually do.

To make it a bit more convenient I've compiled the trait descriptions used by each faction into reference sheets. Currently everything for a faction will fit onto two sheets of A4, so if you print double sided you can have single reference sheet for each faction.

You can find the PDF for the document here.

The Factions and their Leaders

Prefecture of Ryu

The Dragon Clan won the rights to colonize the Westward Isles in a series of duels with their rivals, the Shiho Clan. However, when the Emperor’s vessel expired, and his young heir, too young and inexperienced to concern himself with the petty disputes at the fringes of his lands, the promise of sole settlement rights died with him. The newly formed Prefecture of Ryu found themselves yet again in conflict with their old enemies, the Shiho Clan. Now, the Prefecture’s grasp of power is weakened, due to the recent Tsunami. Their forces are in disarray, they are fighting on all fronts in the aftermath of the disaster. But still the men and women of the Dragon are ready to take their place at Destiny’s table, uniting the human world by defending it against all threats.

Ito Clan

The Ito have long been the laughing stock of the ruling clans. Never quite able to understand that it is their own flaws which hold their greater ambitions back. Being untrustworthy is synonymous with the Ito in the Jwar Isles; their support of the Shiho’s rise to power followed by their treacherous role in the Dragon Wars against the very same clan, highlights their fickle nature. Now though the Ito on the island of Izu have gone through a transformation, their alliance with an age old and powerful Kami has imbued them with a new found strength. If it was the Kami that caused the snake like changes or whether it has simply exaggerated the Ito’s natural affinity is unknown. What is sure is that the Ito finally have the power to rise against the other clans and avenge the mockery and mistreatment they have suffered. Will this venomous clan prove to be one dose of poison too much for the Jwar Isles?

Cult of Yurei

In the shadows and dark corners of the world, the worshippers of Yurei are gathering force. The many members of this Cult may not even be aware that they are serving the same dark masters, but serve them they do – the Yurei Bargain, which in its various forms allows control over life and death, has proven a temptation to many different people who would otherwise have nothing in common. In the Cult of Yurei, you may think yourself the master of your own Fate but you are always advancing the unfathomable goals of dark unseen masters. Even a puppet master has someone pulling his strings...

Silvermoon Syndicate

The thriving port of Jima is the beating heart of the Silvermoon Trade Syndicate’s operations. For generations the merchants of the syndicate have been the trade life blood of the Jwar isles. From the great gambling halls, where fortunes are won or lost, on the roll of a single dice or the draw of a card. A bustling and bountiful harbour brimming with exotic goods and rare delights. Famed arenas where colossal Jumo warriors clash in a brutal dance, or an array of fighting beasts struggle in a battle to the death. Water houses where ones wildest fantasies can become reality with the touch of a Rose. Their power lies not the in military might of the Ito, Takashi or Minimoto but in the stranglehold they have on trade. And not only the trade of goods, but of the secrets and whispers of even the most pious. Some would liken the Silvermoon to the flip of a coin. Pay your debts and you come up in the sun with the fortunes smiling, cross or try to cheat them and you’ll be in the dark and covered in dirt.

Tengu Descension

For countless cycles the elders of the mountain have watched and waited, their quiet vigil in the high places of the world unbroken. Silently they have overseen the rise and fall of innumerable clans, the petty squabbles of mortals bare no relevance to their goal. Gifted with generations of knowledge passed down through the written teachings of the Koroko Shisai and oral histories of the Karasu Shugenja they hold the secrets of the world in their lofty homes. Now stirred into action, one can only imagine the danger that looms that has rustled the Tengu to war.
